Happy Birthday Alex! and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Today our little boy turned 1 year old! I can't believe how fast the year has gone by. We have been through so much over the last year. No one could have prepared us for the trip we were about to embark on when he was born. We truly feel blessed to have our healthy little boy here with us today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEX!

Background

Alex's story began at the first ultrasound visit around 18 weeks. It was around this time that we found out he had a heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Alex has been an amazingly strong baby. He has had multiple surgeries starting during his first weeks of life. Alex was placed on the heart transplant list and receved a heart just before his 4 month birthday. He has shown great strength and has humbled our family. We feel truely blessed by all of the many helping hands and family support we have received, including his Grandpa Doug. Alex has a special bond with his Grandpa Doug who was also born with a heart defect. His Grandpa died due to heart problems associated with his heart defect January, 28 2006. We feel his presence just being around Alex and know that they were together before Alex came to this earth. We also know that he watches over him constantly. Alex is a huge blessing to our family. We are truly greatful to have such a special spirit with us. Seeing all of the hardships he has endured and still being able to smile the way he does brings a smile to everyone around him.
